Description:
Important and historical Australian Colonial Land Grant for Capt. John Piper, dated 5th April 1820, for 190 acres 'To be called Point Piper bounded on the south side by an East line of 47 chains commencing at a small bridge over a salt water creek, on the East side by a north line to rose Bay, and on all other sides by the water of Port Jackson harbour and the before mentioned small creek', signed by Lachlan Macquarie, displaying the paper seal, ink on vellum, 28 cm x 32 cm. Exhibited: Australian Icons, Shapiro, 2007 reference: Sydney Morning Herald, 18th Jan 2007, by Steve Meacham. Note: in 2007, apart from the importance of such a document, it is noted that this land grant corrected history, in that Piper was not granted land in 1816, as believed with the laying of the foundation stone for the Henrietta Villa. The stone was simply a gesture of the promise by Macquarie, hence the reason he never moved into the villa until 1822.
