Description:
A fine sterling silver and malachite ink stand, by Julius Schomburgk, retailed by J.M.Wendt, circa 1870, the shaped rectangular black marble base inset with a malachite veneered border, centred by a malachite box surmounted by a silver figure of an Indigenous Australian male, flanked by a pair of silver-lidded cut glass inkwells with cockatoo finials, supported by four lion-paw feet, hallmarked 'Jm Wendt, Adelaide', anchor and a lion passant, 22 cm high, 26 cm wide, 17 cm deep. Provenance: Purchased by the current vendors grandmother in Adelaide in 1943. Other Notes: Schomburgk's commissions for Wendt were some, of the finest and most expensive pieces in the retailer's inventory. An ink stand of similar design is held in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide. In the 1860s malachite in Australia was mined at Burra Burra, and Australian silver with malachite mounts is generally always by an Adelaide maker
