Description:
A good Tokyo school tagayasan wood and ivory netsuke of Hotei attributed to Suzuki Tôkoku [Bairyû] (1845-1913), standing and laughing with hands raised above his tilted head, wearing beaded bracelets and necklace of various materials, a green-stained nyoi sceptre tuck into his sash. Signed on a red lacquer tablet. Height 3.9 cm. Recorded as being self-taught, his works are distinguished by the masterful use of inlay in various coloured materials, a technique which he himself developed. Netsuke by this artist are held in the Hermitage and British Museums. Provenance: The Flower Family Collection.
