Colonial breakfront bookcase, circa 1845, constructed of pit saw cut river red gum, four door panelled base, with petitie height drawers flanked by trefoil turned columns., rising to a four glazed door top, each door flanked by trefoil turned columns, topped with a crenalated pediment, This bookcase is possibly a unique example of the use of river red gum timber, 'Eucalyptus Camaldulensis' this early 19th century breakfront bookcase is in the English 'Regency Gothic' style, fashionable in the 1830's and 40's. In the manufacture of Australian Colonial furniture., a similar design appears in J C Loudon's, 1833 London edition of his 'Encylopaedia of cottage, farm and Villa Architecture and furniture'., construction most likely took place during the acrimonious governorships of Lt. Colonel Sir George Gawler and Captain George grey 1838 - 1845, a significant period in the development of Parlimentary and Local Government in South Australia, height 310 cm, width 244 cm, depth 73 cm
