Description:
Pelsaert, Francois. Ongeluckige Voyagie van het Schip Batavia... na Oost-indien en gebleven is op de Abrollos van Fredrick Houtman. Amsterdam, Gillis Joosten Saeghman, [circa 1663]. Small quarto, pp. 44 printed double column, with a wood-engraved title vignette, full-page wood-engraving on title verso, and 6 copper-engraved illustrations in the text, modern limp vellum, tied, in slipcase. Inner margin of title backed and a little stained, very small rust-hole in final engraving, but a very good copy with ample margins., Pelsaert's 'unlucky voyage', first published in 1647: this is the last of the early editions, all of which are very rare on the market. The story of the wreck of the Batavia on the Houtman Abrolhos in 1629 and the savage aftermath of mutiny, massacre and rape, followed by the hanging of the ringleaders, is the first European event in Australia to have been recorded not very long afterwards. The views are the earliest published representations of scenes in Australia, Pelsaert's narrative of his intrepid boat journey along the Western Australian coast to seek help at Batavia is the first published account of Australian coastal discovery, and his descriptions of Aborigines encountered are likewise the earliest in print. Landwehr, Voc, 411, Tiele, Memoire, 243.
