Description:
1955 Mercedes-Benz 180 Saloon. After Mercedes-Benz recommenced production after World War II the basic mechanical components were of a pre-war design. In 1953 a new full width body of unitary construction, available with two engine sizes, a four cylinder unit of 1767cc's, and a six cylinder unit of 2195cc, was introduced. The unitary construction resulted in improved rigidity and noise reduction. These features combined with Mercedes-Benz legendary reliability and high quality gave the 180 a performance that belied its role as a base model car. Powered by the four cylinder variant the 180 proved hugely popular and from 1953 onwards over 100,000 180s were produced before the introduction of the 180a in 1957. Indeed such was the reliability and comfort of the model that many examples found themselves employed for use as taxis all over the world. This example was purchased by the current vendor in 1982. Little is known of the car's history prior to 1982. The car had spent many years in the Otago region but it is not clear whether or not the previous owner was the original owner of the car. The current vendor gave the car a thorough mechanical overhaul in the late 1980s going but in essence the car is offered in largely original condition having been well maintained all its life and have covered just over 100,000 miles from new. The car offers an excellent and affordable route into the world of classic car ownership. At the time of going to press the vendor was abroad but we do hope to have more information regarding this car by the time of sale.
