Description:
A rare Chinese silk robe for Empress Dowager Cixi, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), early Guangxu period (1875-1908), the very beautiful robe embroidered on a chestnut silk with peonies in green, lilac and ice blue, decorated with auspicious emblems for good fortune and longevity, and exquisitely edged with golden thread. A rare pleated hem, indicates an Imperial winter robe, presented in a perspex case measuring 227 cm wide, 20 cm deep, 149 cm high. Provenance: Purchased Linda Wrigglesworth, Sydney, November 1999, Butterfield and Butterfield, San Francisco, 7-9 November, 1998.
