Description:
Gill, Samuel Thomas (mainly after). Adler, C. (printed by). [Melbourne Rose]. Engraved and chromolithographed circular roseate novelty souvenir, opened approximately 260 mm, with four fold lines, as issued, some old tape repairs. [Hamburg, From C. Adler's Printing Establishment], circa 1862. A rare Gill piracy and a very attractive novelty souvenir. Folded to form a small bouquet of pink roses printed in colour, the piece opens to form a circle with twenty-eight separate miniature engraved vignettes of (mainly) Melbourne streetscapes, buildings, including the 1861 Exhibition Building and the Melbourne & Hobson's Bay Railway Station St. Kilda, etc. Most of the engravings appear to derive from Victoria Illustrated and other images by Gill. Accompanied by the original envelope titled 'the Melbourne Rose Part II. and further endorsed 'Honour to the Brave, in Memory of' and illustrated with portrait vignettes of Burke, Wills and King, with the imprints of Adler (Hamburgh) and Joseph, Myers & Co. (London). We are aware of only one other example of this envelope.
