Description:
George Barrington, D'Arcy Wentworth & Botany Bay: the London Chronicle, November 14-17, 1789: This edition carries a detailed report on an appearance by the notorious pickpocket George Barrington, a further update on the fate of D'Arcy Wentworth and a small but fascinating note of a report from America. '...the House of Representatives have fixed the salary of the President at 25,000 dollars per ann. including all expences, for the Vice President 5000 per ann. and for each of the Secretaries and Representatives six dollars per day. On arrival in Sydney in the transport Active in September 1791, Barrington was sent to work at Toongabbie. 'Irreproachable conduct' soon won him a place in the police watch that protected the government stores. In November 1792 he received a conditional pardon. In 1796 John Hunter made this absolute and appointed Barrington chief constable at Parramatta. He also had his own house at Parramatta, 2 thirty-acre (12 ha) land grants and fifty acres (20 ha) which he bought on the Hawkesbury and farmed with assigned servants.
