The structure and use of the Eastern flexible and Western rigid moulds are contrasted, and illustrations from both manuscript, printed, and photographic sources are shown to explain the two techniques. Micrographs and discussion of the plant fibres used in ancient papers allows practical papermaking problems to be introduced.
