A silver Horizontal sundial-compass, Michael Butterfield, early 18th century, elongated octagonal, inset with a circular compass, the dial chapter includes four sets of engraved scales alternating in Roman & Arabic numeral made for latitudes, with a folding bird gnomon engraved for latitudes 40-60, engraved underneath with tables of latitudes for 32 cities, signed 'Butterfield a Paris' to front, housed in small portable leather case, 6.5 x 6 cm, Note: Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) was a British clockmaker who relocated to Paris in the 1660s. Here he retailed precision instruments which attracted nobility from around the world such as Russia's Tzar Peter the Great. Butterfield later was appointed Engineer to the King of France.
