Phar Lap shoe, Trentham New Zealand 1928 original horseshoe from Phar Lap, from the saddlery at the Trentham Racecourse, Wellington. the general nail pattern of known later racing plates, fastened to a wooden plaque, engraved 'Phar Lap/Trentham NZ/1928'. Originally billed as Lot 41, the un-named chestnut colt owned sold on January 24 1928 for 160 guineas to David Davis, picked up by Harry Telford, & taken to Australia. The plate was acquired on that day by one of the under-bidders, Wellington trainer Grange Waterson who had purchased from Trentham sales in 1927 & 1928. Waterson was an important figure in New Zealand racing into the 1960s, with a letter of provenance from the Waterson family, the story of Grange Waterson was first heard on ABC Radio 'Nightlife' (19 August 2016).
