Description:
1911 (Sept.17) usage of 'Deutsche Sudpolar Expedition' vignette in unusual combination with Argentinian 5c on Rp postcard to Germany. Both adhesives tied by Buenos Aires cancel. Most examples of the expedition vignette were used when the ship had reached South Georgia and therefore bear Falkland Islands stamps; this usage, en route, is very unusual. German Polar Expedition 1911-12 led by Wilhelm Filchner on 'Deutschland' The Expedition visited South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and surveyed the Luitpold Coast in the Weddell Sea. They discovered & named the Filchner ice sheet. The ship was beset for nine months during which time they disproved the existence of South Greenland which had been shown on maps since 1823.
