A modern design chess set by Fritz Steller c.1967. Glazed stoneware. King height 23.5 cm. Provenance: Acquired from the artist's Studio circa 1967/68. Born 1941, Fritz Steller is a native of Dresden, Germany He studied at Birmingham school of Art, taught in Kidderminster and then established square one design Studio in Stratford-upon-Avon. Between 1969 and 1975, Fritz Steller produced some of the most dramatic and innovative post war architectural ceramics seen in Britain, his most famous being the series of ten massive stoneware panels made for Huddersfield's Queensgate Market titled 'Articulation in Movement', 1970, the only other known ceramic work by Steller in the UK is a mural in Tamworth library. He spent over 20 years in South Africa and is now living and working as a sculptor in Germany
