Description:
An unusual provincial weight driven 8 day wall clock by John Hepton north Allerton, circa 1830. Beautifully figured case, hood and trunk trunk inlayed in boxwood, satinwood, and ebony, veneered with well figured flame mahogany, the crested hood mounted with finial on a pediment, the opening key lock cast brass bezel with convex glass. Original restored painted convex dial showing crazing, blued steel hands and Roman numerals., the 2 train movement with shaped plates striking the hour on a bell with a high count gear train for the short drop, decorative turned pillars between the plates, original brass covered lead bob pendulum with rating nut, with 2 rectangular shaped cast lead weights and original winding key. It is thought possible that case was made by an ex Chippendale factory employee, as the works were close to where John Hepton worked in north Yorkshire. Correspondance from David F. Severs relating to the Heptons, with ref to his new book a Concise Guide to the Clockmakers of north Allerton and their clocks. David F. Severs
