An Elegant Anton Seuffert Domed…

Sale Title: New Zealand Historica, Jewellery, Collectables, Silver
Auction House: Dunbar Sloane Ltd.
Auction Location: Auckland
Date: 14/05/2008
Lot No.   ***
Description: An Elegant Anton Seuffert Domed Glove Box, burr totara with native timber inlay. This glove box is an early example from the workshop of New Zealand's premier colonial cabinetmaker. The black label attached inside indicates construction prior to 1869 when Seuffert's label was upgraded to reflect his Royal Appointment. As the name implies, glove boxes were made to store small clothing items or possibly valuable mementoes. In 1875 these boxes were advertised for sale for £3. This box is an interesting example featuring burr totara veneer inlaid with an elegant marquetry pattern on the lid and parquetry banding over the lid and down the sides. The small, rounded keyhole escutcheon is of the style common to Anton Seuffert's work. Length 29 cm, Width 10.5 cm
