Description: A Superb & Extremely rare Military Despatch Box made of silver pine (NZ native). The fall front door revealing 6 graduated drawers with recessed handles below. 4 letter holes. Brass recessed handles to top and reversible brass plate inset into door. (One side inscribed 'The General Head Quarters', the other 'The Governor/ Auckland'. The box belong to Lieutenant General George Dean Pitt and probably dates c.1859. George Dean Pitt was the son of Major General Pitt, who arrived in New Zealand in 1847 with his wife, son George and five daughters. Attached to them were eighty rank and file members of the Royal New Zealand Fencibles together with women and children. George was born c.1822 and became his father's Adc. It is even conceivable that he obtained this chest for military and political papers for his father. George was commissioned as an Ensign in the 48th Regiment in 1839. His father died in 1851 and in 1863 he proceeded with others to raise volunteers in Victoria for the Waikato War. The 1st Waikato Regiment was known as 'Pitt's Four-hundred.' George passed away in 1883. Height 53 cm, Width 53 cm, Diameter 31 cm
