Sale Title: New Zealand Historica, Jewellery, Collectables, Silver
Auction House: Dunbar Sloane Ltd.
Auction Location: Auckland
Date: 14/05/2008
Lot No.   ***
Description: WWI NZ Mounted Rifles Album. This is a small personal album of an unidentified member of the NZ Mounted Rifles. The album has 24 pages and contains 48 Images. The quality of the images and the subject matter suggests this may be the album of an Officer (perhaps even a senior officer) likely with the Auckland Mounted Rifles. The images are on the whole unpublished with the exception of one, which the vendor of the album has allowed publication of, in the 2007 book 'Devils on Horses' the history of the NZ Mr in Palestine by Lt Col Terry Kinloch. This particular image is one of three in the album relating to the little known massacre at Surafend on 9-10 December 1918. An Arab stole the kitbag of a Trooper Lowry. Lowry gave chase and was fatally shot in the chest. His effects were found near the village of Surafend and so men of the Nzmr took it upon themselves to enact some revenge for the murder and other actions for which they considered the occupants culpable. An unknown number of Nzmr men entered the village and after 1/z an hour 40 adult male occupants of the village were left dead or dying. This incident was almost wholly hushed up by the NZ Forces and went essentially unpublished until very recently. Other images include the staff car of the senior NZ officer (General Chaytor), complete with bomb damage (the bomb nearly killed him) and the Jewish Cemetery at Ayan Kaya. This cemetery for the men of the Nzmr was established by the local Jewish population in appreciation of the service of the Nzmr in defeating the Turks. This is an important historical collection, one of few known photographic records of the Surafend massacre
