Description:
Gandhara (Pakistan) A Fragment of a Stupa Panel Depicting Indo-Greek Soldiers Circa 100 BC - 100 AD Carved Schist Height 30 cm Width 36 cm. Note (a) The 1st Century BC saw the construction of numerous Buddhist shrines and monasteries, and the provision for them of narrative reliefs in stone. The most striking aspect of this sculpture is its Graeco-Roman features, which stem from the legacy, firstly, of Alexander the Great's invasion of the subcontinent; and secondly, from the cultural and commercial links that persisted between Gandhara and the Hellenised East. (b) Indo-Greek soldiers are occasionally represented in the art of Gandhara, such friezes serving as decoration on the pedestals of Buddhist stupas
