Stamped internally 'G + S.Co' for Gerrard Sleep (in business approx 1856/59) and inscribed internally 'A McL to McK 1859'. This is possibly the earliest piece of dateable goldfields jewellery from the Ballarat area. With an associated Victorian-era ring display ***
*** A hand crafted, 18ct yellow gold solitaire style diamond ring. (Finger size = N + 1/2]. The ring contains one claw set round brilliant cut diamond, clarity 'Si1', colour approximately 'O', good cut quality. Diamond weight = 5.65ct. Gold = 5.45gms. Accompanied by an insurance valuation certificate from Australian Gem Testing Laboratory, Melbourne [July 2007] for $57,550. ***

C Marks & Co were retailers and manufacturing jewellers situated at the corner of Sturt & Lydiard Streets (where Allens Jewellers are today). In the 19th century Marks had a single storey shop which was demolished with much fanfare c1901 to build the multistorey building there today.… ***
