Provenance: Jim Pike's widow Olga sold this bridle with the rest of his riding gear to John East in 1975, who sold them at auction through Scott's of Dandenong in 1998, to Reg Howarth of Tahoma Stud ***

Arthur Edward 'Scobie' Breasley (1914-2006) was an outstanding Australian jockey, the winner of the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne five times (1942-5 & 1952), the Epsom Derby twice, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe once. The racing authorities in the state of Victoria struck a medal in his honour, awarded annually since 1996 to the best jockey in the state.… ***

Pike was regarded as the best jockey of his generation: as having an intuitive sense of pace. In turn, Pike regarded Phar Lap as a freak galloper. The pair got on famously. When aboard the champion, Pike seldom had to do any more than flick his whip in Phar Lap's general direction. ***
