*** A very rare set of Gold Assayer's Weight's in a circular ivory case, mid 19th century. Stamped L.Oertling, 12 Store Street London, the weights most likely platinum. 6 cm diameter ***

Originally made in th U.K. to be Sovereign weighing bank scales, they were so useful and accurate that they soon found their way to the Australian Goldfields to deal with the masses of Gold being found here. The Chinese Miners brought with them many things, amongst them these unusual scales, which would have been used for weighing herbs and such (and most probably opium). Here they used them to weigh gold. This is a rare large set ***
