This table represents one of the more complex and free flowing of the Seuffert 'standard patterns', the Fern and Clematis design, similar to a table presented to Countess Aberdeen in 1887, this top is likely to comprise 5,824 pieces of timber, each one laid with such precision that the pattern flows effortlessly. The practice of inlaying marquetry into detailed parquetry background patterns is an endearing feature of this top.… ***

This card table from Anton Seuffert's workshop is a very fine, complete example with original base of this type by Nz premier colonial cabinetmaker. Card tables were a Seuffert speciality and his 1875 raffle advertisement in the Auckland Herald valued card tables of this design at 10 pounds. Fifteen years later inflation raised the price to 11 pounds.… ***

*** A Beautiful Arts and Crafts Period Card Table by William Seuffert (1858-1943). This table is a unique piece and appears to be one of William Seuffert's later creations. It incorporates patterns used in earlier work by both William and his father, Anton. The simplification of the overall table design and squaring of the circular edging indicate a conscious development towards the modernisation of the table genre.… ***

*** Winks & Hall Card Table c.1885 This exceptional card or games table is attributed to the substantial cabinetmaking firm Winks & Hall who commenced trade c.1863 and continued through to the 1930's in their Shortland Street premises. Extensive use is made of burr totara, figured puriri and rewarewa. The top of the table folds open and rotates to provide a baize-lined playing surface. As the top rotates a storage compartment for cards is revealed.… ***
