*** Finely Carved 19th century Mangaia Ceremonial Adze the wood base of quadrangular pedestal form, each face composed of square panels, intricately carved with geometric patterns, domed section above surmounted by the stone hafted adze secured with plaited lashing. Brought to New Zealand in the 1880s by a member of the vendor's family but vendor has no further knowledge of provenance. Height 49 cm ***
