Handle also well balanced with hour glass incisions taken from each side and enjoined approximately within the centre. Handle terminates with three soft well defined ridges. *** Prestigious Mere Pounamu - In the Name of Tinirau, well-balanced kawakawa mere pounamu with finely defined striking edge. The blade gracefully reducing to the grip section with an off centred suspension hole. Terminating in softly defined ridges the mere signifies the work of a master craftsman and the mana of its past custodians. Small frits evident to the leading strike edge. Height 31.5 cm. Width 10.5 cm ***
*** Superb Kotiate, finely carved in a formal manner the beautifully symmetrical blade offers a complex triple haehae and pakati surface design which reflects the work of a master carver. The shaft hold a finely worn patina suggesting great age and use. A powerfully resolved manaia form guards the Kotiate and its master. Legend has it that a chief carrying such weapon would often challenge the opposing chief to a single combat. The first to achieve three blows won the duel and often the war. Height 33 cm.… ***
*** 18th Century Finely Carved Waka Huia - Treasure Box, stone tool carved with triple haehae lines framing bold double rarua spirals and finely graduating pakati (dog tooth notching) and Tuara kuri (diamond notching) this remarkable wakahuia expresses the work an unknown master carver.… ***
*** Superb Kahu Kiwi - Kiwi Feather Cloak, adorned with mature brown northern Kiwi feathers in orthodox style, the side borders offer a transitional style of white, black and yellow looped, dyed muka. Single Kiwi feathers are attached to every second aho (weft). The muka kaupapa is in good order and shows two areas of tailored shaping. L820 mm. W109 cm. ***
*** Early Kahu Kiwi - Kiwi Feather Cloak, adorned with mature brown Kiwi feathers in orthodox style. The top border offers Kaka feathers. Individual Kiwi feathers are attached on every third aho (weft). The muka kaupapa is in good order and shows a single area of tailored shaping. L96.5 cm. W112.1 cm. ***
*** Mere Pounamu, prestigious example in orthodox form. Crafted from speckled kawakawa nephrite with the blade offering a beautiful translucent patina. The haft terminates with rare wekaweka colorisation. Fine balance and form. Height 37 cm. Width 10.4 cm.. Depth 1.5 cm. ***
*** Finely Carved Hoe, masterfully carved for use by high ranking person. Orthodox leaf shaped blade offer six complete Manaia decorated with rauponga and paua eyes throughout non-leading surface of paddle. Shoulder terminates with split tongue Tiki. Reverse side of the blade (the working surface) is finished in low relief kowhaiwhai to enhance the smooth entry and exit of the blade while maximizing the friction and pull of the blade.… ***
*** A Fine Waka Huia attributed to Jacob William Heberly (Hakopa Heperi) 1849-1906, the dark brown wooden vessel of oval shape with two projecting carved faces at either end. Two large faces at centre on opposite sides continues as a raised band across middle section of the lid. Two mirrored Koruru heads on opposite ends of the lid, the tongues of which act as fittings to secure the lid to the base section. Height 51.5 cm Width 14.4 cm Diameter 14.5 cm ***
*** Rare And Superb Fijian War Club - Culacula, superbly balanced and made from a single piece of age soaked Vesi (Iron Wood) the culacula form is highly complex offering subtle concave and convex surfaces throughout the blade. The decorative elements are highly achieved with geometric carving throughout the grip and lower and upper mid section of the work. The head of the club is of a sophisticated design with the centre line tapering off to a thin mid section that then flares as it terminates towards the tip.… ***
*** A Superb and Important Maori Kumete, delicate shallow cupped lid with fine double rarua spirals and haehae lines throughout. Handle presents mirrored tekoteko figures connected head to head and arching forward in acrobatic stance. Body of vessel carved in full with signs of innovative / transitional style of 1880 period. The work is supported by two heavily carved highly figurative humanistic forms with full moko who gaze intensely outward. Hands are cupped firmly over ears suggesting a defiant statement.… ***
*** Venerated Bonito Totem, of significant size offering orthodox triangulated mother of pearl incised scales to celebrate the luminous nature of this important food source and spiritual totem. Overall form is sleek and well balanced reflecting the carver’s close association with the Bonito. Tail section is also reliefed in realistic manner. c1900. *** Large And Superb Maori Toki, toki of this scale had lineage, ceremonial and technical significant. Embodying gods associated with the ancestral creators of the technical carpentry. The giant toki was used to undertake large societal projects such as the felling of giant Kauri and the building of migratory canoes. Large type 1A (duff) with rectangular cross section. Hammer pecked butt with remaining surface smoothed to a fine polish. Cutting edge is slightly chipped otherwise in good condition.… ***
*** Carved architectural element, an old carved timber lintel piece with ancestral figure standing upon one another. Male and female figures apparent. Complex intertwining carving. Old label attached refers to 'Lake Rotorua, NZ'. Dark, aged patina. 18th century. Length 68 cm. Width 6.6 cm. ***
*** Fine Dogon Statue, seated on a stool with fragmentary legs supporting an elongated torso with triple-lined triangular motif, raised tubular navel and conical breasts; rounded shoulders holding elongated, slightly bent arms with hands resting upon knees. The extended cylindrical neck supports an oblong head with a squared chin, raised beard and small, raised, circular mouth. A braided coiffure with cross-hatched motif and raised ‘C’-shaped ears to back of head.… ***
*** Gigantic Chiefly Hei Tiki Pounamu, standing over 19 cm tall this remarkable Hei Tiki Pounamu offers a vertically set hour glassed suspension hole. The head balanced to the right is full of powerful and expressive detailing. Muscular shoulders support the head with elbows terminating onto the thighs. The elongated torso is well defined with muscular motifs dominating. Overall form worn and polished. Recently repatriated; this prestigious hei tiki pounamu left New Zealand circa 1895. Height 21 cm.
