[The initials W.H.W. are the proprietor W.H.Woodhouse, who owned the ground in Sheffield. Frederick Spofforth, superb signature on piece. An extremely rare signature missing from many advanced collections. Spofforth, known as 'The Demon Bowler' played 18 Tests for Australia 1876-87, and was the greatest figure in early Australian Test cricket. He took the first Test hat trick in 1878-79, and is best remembered for his courageous 14/90 at The Oval Test in 1882 which enabled Australia to win its first Test in England, and led to the Ashes tradition.
